Traveling Thoughts and Thoughts on Traveling

Cold Showers

May 27, 2008 – 10:30 pm

Memorial Day Weekend was too much fun. (Before I go any further, since it was Memorial Day, and it’s so easy to forget why we really have holidays, here’s a picture of Los Angeles National Cemetery taken over the weekend. Wonder how long it took them.)

I spent the long weekend at Big Bear Lake, which is a popular ski resort in Southern California about a two-hour car drive and 100 miles (160 km) from the section of Los Angeles where I live. It didn’t really count as traveling, but it was enough to scratch my traveler’s itch a bit, which goes to show how domesticated I’ve become of late. (Those of you who were once used to traveling all the time should know what I mean.)

I’m not a meteorologist, but I think the steam, which is highly unusual, might be an indicator of the weird weather that surely annoyed Southern Californians to no end over the holiday weekend.

More significantly, though, this was a perfect example of whom you’re with being more important than where you are. It had been a while since I spent a long weekend with so many friends (and getting more inebriated than I probably should have in the process).

Did anyone notice I wrote “ski resort” in the above paragraph? It wasn’t ski season (Memorial Day Weekend typically marks the beginning of very warm weather in Southern California), but there might’ve been enough snow for it. Talk about global warming.

And guess what? The gas didn’t work at our cabin, so it was cold showers for everyone in a cabin without any heating during a weekend characterized by 30-degree (Fahrenheit) weather. Yippee!

Okay, all sarcasm aside, the cold showers weren’t too bad. I mean, they were cold. They were cold showers, but they didn’t hurt as some of my friends described. At least the hot tub on the deck worked, and I preluded both my showers with an extended dip in that relaxing, relaxing pool of bubbling, volcanic water.

Hm, I’m not really making sense right now. Maybe some of the Grey Goose and JD are still in me. At least I plugged that bit about global warming.
